w/c 16th June 2019 – a busy week.

Firstly well done to David J. for getting through to the last 16 in Bowls Wiltshire 2 wood competition, he will be up against Tom Warner from Salisbury BC to be played by 30th June

After last week’s successes it will be an interesting week to see if we can keep up the impetus.

On Sunday the Ladies played away in the National Top Ten Competition. We were up against Chippenham Town, who fielded a very strong team and unfortunately we lost all four points. We have a couple of experienced ladies unable to play at the present time and it was pleasing that members stood in at short notice. Hopefully they enjoyed the experience of playing at that level. Well done Ladies.

The Monday Mixed team were away to Warminster and had a very good win 57-43 (8-2pts), well done, my correspondent on the day did admit to losing their rink, keep trying Rod!

Also on Monday Dave J and Barry W were up against Chippenham Park in the 3rd round of the Men’s National pairs, unfortunately they lost, but well done for getting to the 3rd round, its all good experience.

On Tuesday the Men are away toBradford-on-Avon (BOA Constrictors) in the West Wilts Senior Citizens League and after trailing at the start managed a fine win 27-12, well done Paul, Des, Geoff and Dave G

In the evening the Men took on Warminster in the 3rd round of the Tourist Trophy. Although hopes were high against our Div 1 opponents, unfortunately it didn’t go well on the night and we crashed out of the competition. Our home rink took an early lead but were pegged back and by the half way stage were trailing. We remained in arrears until the end, losing 16-21.Our away rink struggled throughout on a difficult unpredicable green and trailed all the way, ending the match 23-16 down. The final outcome was a 12 shot deficit, however we wish Warminster all the best in the next round.

On Wednesday the Ladies were at home to Devizes Dark Horses in the Nor West league.Again the ladies secured a win, this by 4pts to 2pts. It was a very good evening with the visitors saying how pleasant it was to be at the Calne club. We had a small group of spectators which boosted one rink from a 11-0 deficit to a 24-12 win. We obviously enjoy the attention!

Also on Wednesday Martha and Yvonne went off to play Nor-West league friendly at Wootton Bassett, with representative team taking on one from Swindon and District. It was a very friendly match with Yvonne ending on the winning rink and getting a prize, whilst Martha could only look on, well done Yvonne, These sort of games are fun to take part in and very social , especially when the rain stays away, other members will be encouraged to take part in due course.

Thursday the Men’s Mid Wilts Triples team took on Trowbridge Westbourne A at home, having lost 59-70 (2-12pts) away earlier this season in the first game of the season, revenge was on the cards, all rinks started of well and by half time it was running 43 – 18 in favour of Calne, the evening did not get any better for the Trowbridge team with Calne winning 94-45 (14 – 0pts), however it was played in a most friendly manner and was enjoyed by both teams, there is still one more game to play against Trowbridge Westbourne A, they will be out for their revenge then. Thanks ladsĀ  for a great night.
