w/c 30/6 starts with a very special day

The week started on Sunday with the Sponsors Day, A chance for the club to say thankyou to their supporters. The gates opened at 12 noon and guest started arriving at 1.00pm. After instructions etc. bowling started at approximately 2. 00pm with club members on each rink to help our visitors. Below is a group photo however a gallery will be completed this week. The final was contested between the black and the red teams, the target competition was won by Lisa, the two spiders by Martha and Carl. It was agood fun day with plenty to eat and drink, a lot of friendly rivalry.

Before the fun started (gallery coming soon)

Monday the mixed team played at Blue Circle, unfortunately they lost 52 – 41, 8-2 in points never mind there is always next week.

In the evening 3 of our Men were playing in the 1st round of the men’s national singles.Unfortunately Barry W could not meet the next rounds date so conceded his game, David J was also away to R Ellis at Chippenham Town and we are still waiting for his result, Paul’s opponent conceded, so Paul is through to the next round.

Tuesday we were away to Box in the West Wilts Senior League. Unfortunately Calne could not master the green and lost their unbeaten record 23-14.

On Wednesday the ladies played a league game away at Corsham. Our opponents are currently second in the league, just one point below the leaders so this was not going to be an easy match. One rink won so we came away with 2 points. We hope for a better result next week.

Also on Wednesday David J beat Paul M in the Men’s National Singles.

On Thursday the men’s triples team was at home to the 2nd place team Trowbridge Town, It was a hard fought game and Trowbridge Town came out winners 79-67 (10-4 pts), our rink winners were Barry W (who made a great comeback, Rod Amor (quite a large win for Rod!), Martin S was in the lead but lost it on the last few ends and it was just not a good night for Pauls team. That will probably put Trwobridge Town back on top with a 4point lead, however Calne do have a better shot difference so it is all to play for.

Just when I thought the week was over, I received the following report from 4 of our members who crossed the border into Berkshire, my thanks go to Martin G.for this.

Martin and Pam G went to the annual Hungerford mixed pairs gala with Steve and Yvonne McC on Saturday 6th July.

There were 30 pairs representing bowls clubs in Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire so a good spread of experience and geography.

The day, which was really to hot, was played as 4 sets of 6 ends which allowed the contestants a chance to ” learn” the green and gives an outcome based on ability.

The organisers didn’t publish a full placing list, being only interested in the 2 top pairs who were both the only ones to win all 4 of their matches and they played off for top spot.

However, the Calne teams didn’t disgrace themselves, Steve and Yvonne were certainly in the top 10 whilst Martin and Pam were mid table.

It was a rare treat to play mixed pairs against good players and to support another club, who have supported Calne in the past.

Looks like that shot didn’t go well
That head looks difficult

THE WEEK IS NOW OFFICIALLY OVER!
