Bowls Wiltshire report on our Ladies – National Finals – 2022

I have taken the liberty of copying the report from the Bowls Wiltshire Website, which gives us a full report of our ladies success.

We start with Saturday’s action. First off, we discuss the Women’s Senior Fours, where Wiltshire’s Sally Field, Mayumi Lewis, Sheila Murphy and Yvonne McColl of Calne took to the greens, with their opening match being against Cherry Rolf, Rene Moody, Beth Gelhard and Bertie Woodburn of the Isle of Wight. It’s always a good feeling to win through a preliminary round at the finals, and this is exactly what our Wiltshire ladies did, recording a hard fought 19-13 win to secure their place in round 1.

Next up in round 2 for our four, were Gloucestershire quartet Lin Brighty, Maureen Richards-Smart, Pauline Gunn and Kay Gent, who were the fortunate receivers of a bye into the first round, so were yet to play a game in the competition. The experience on the greens may have aided our Calne combination, as in an incredibly tight battle, they managed to record a 16-14 victory and book their place in the final game of the day and the last 16 of the competition.

Next up for our ladies was a battle with Kent, who had dispatched of their first round opponents 13-5 and looked to be in very good form. Unfortunately, this was where the competition was to end for Wiltshire, as despite fighting as hard as they could, went down 22-5 as Kent booked their place in Sunday’s quarter-final. A shame for it to end this way, but a fantastic run for our ladies nonetheless, to reach the last 16 of the country is nothing to be ashamed of at all!

On Saturday our Ladies had their first game in the preliminary round at 9-30am against Isle of Wight,.  After a super 12 up after 3 ends there was a period of uncertainty for the next 6 ends or so but the ladies regrouped and won the game 19-13.

The next game was delayed by an impromptu display of Morris dancing by the Middleton cup men. Once the green had been cleared the 1st round started and this was a much more cagey affair.  The game ebbed and flowed right until the final end.  Our Ladies were 3 behind and 2 down when Yvonne stepped up and following Sheila’s instructions to the letter she took the jack back to make the 3 required to draw. The extra end began with Sally’s second wood on the jack and that’s where it stayed to eventually win the end by 2 and the match 16-14.  The 2nd round had to be played directly after this match, making it 3 games for our Ladies to be played on the same day.  Unfortunately they lost 5-22, although the game was better than the score indicates.

However we are very proud of our ladies, Sally Field, Mayumi Lewis, Sheila Murphy and Yvonne McColl, for representing Wiltshire. We believe that that this is the furthest any Wiltshire ladies in this group have ever reached.

In closing, I would like to thank Karen Varney, Sue Pitman and Les Fish for the information and photographs making up this report.

The week started on Sunday when we entertained Cirencester in a friendly match. We played 2 rinks of triples and 2 of fours and after a close fought match we each won on 2 rinks with the visitors coming out on top with a shot score of 60-54. It was a very enjoyable afternoon played in the right spirit with plenty of good natured banter and our usual lovely tea was enjoyed by both sides. Special thanks to our players who helped Cirencester and to Beard’s catering service for the refreshments. Our thoughts were with our Captain Steve who had to drop out at the last minute, we wish him a speedy recovery. Photos are in the gallery.

On Monday in the North Wilts Mixed league we were at home to Trowbridge Westbourne, due to the hot weather the game finished at 10 ends with a win to Calne by 48-21 (10-0pts). In the evening in round 2 of the Bowls Wiltshire County Champion of Champion Yvonne McColl played Jo Hicks (Highworth) and unfortunately lost. Unfortunately I arrived to late to take a picture of the scoreboard or the winner, so this will have to do.
