w/e 21st August 2021

The season is slowly coming to an end, but this week is still pretty busy.

On Monday evening there was a rearranged game in the Men’s MWTL when Calne ‘B’ took on Trowbridge Town ‘B’ at home, unfortunately they lost 41-59 (4-8pts). Howvere some good news is that on the same evening our mixed duo of Yvonne and Dave J. travelled to Devizes, with a small group of supporters, in the semi-final of the West Wilts Holloway Mixed Pairs and won 29-12, the game ending on the 16th end. They now are in the final, as far as your correspondent knows it is a first time a Calne team has reached the final in this competition, The final is to be held on the 1st or 3rd Sept at Avon B.C.I have no doubt there will be supporters to cheer (quietly) them on.

On Tuesday, 2 of the 4 Tuesday teams were at home . In the Men’s WHL Calne A, who are currently top of the 3rd division, took  on Trowbridge Westbourne ‘C’ they won 25-8 and in doing so became champions of division 3. The ‘B’ team in division 5 were against Devizes ‘E’ and won 21-18, finishing the league on a winning note, after doing very well in division 5. In the Seidal league the Blues do not have a game this week whilst the Green team travelled to Corsham. They had a very close game and secured a good win.

In the evening it is Club Night, all welcome.

On Wednesday the Wiltshire Masons were up against the Somerset Masons at Calne, The Wiltshire Masonic BA ran out winners, taking 3 of the 4 rinks, they enjoyed a bowlers tea with sandwiches prepared by Pip and cakes made by several of the ladies, they all had a good time and we look forward to seeing them again on the 1st Sept.

A team of 4 Calne Ladies travelled to Wilton (Salisbury) and had a good day playing in a Bowls Wiltshire Trophy match.

Thursday evening brought a game in the Men’s MWTL was very interesting when Calne ‘B’ ( currently 4th in the league) were at ‘away’ to the league winners Calne ‘A’, it was exciting from start to finish, with the ‘B’ team giving the league champions a bit of a shock to start with. The score reflects how close it was, unfortunately the ‘B’ team lost 45-49 (3-9 pts), even though they won 1 rink and drew another.

Friday there was another Men’s MWT game, this time Calne ‘A’ take on Warminster in the Imagine Cruising Semi-final at Calne, Warminster was a Division 1 team and it was always going to be a good game, but in the end the Calne ‘A’ team came out on top winning 62-48 and so progress to the final, well done lads. At the same time, in the BW Ladies Triples league, the final game was at home to Chippenham Park, After a tense game ending with shots for 41 and against 39, this score sealed the top spot in their division. This is the first season of this league. Very well done ladies.

To finish off the week on Saturday the club was going to take  part in the Calne Public Participation Event, however due to bad weather coming in, the Council have decided to cancel the event, it’s a great shame as we were hoping to reach some of the community to let them know what a great game bowls is.
