On Tuesday evening we welcomed a Spencers rink from B-o-A, the match was played in a competitive although good spirited manner. Derek, Les and Paul playing their second game of the day, skipped by Barry W, opened with 2 shots and played very well, but we were always trailing until a late rally ended with a commendable 18-22 defeat.
Back at Calne Dave J, Tony Dave & Ian G didn’t start at all well, dropping a 4 and a 3 to start. That early set back became the telling factor as they did win an impressive 10 of the 21 ends, but ended up losing 14-23.
The opposition was a step up in class for Calne BC. But we were definitely not out of our depth and it is a level we should aspire to reach.
On Wednesday Barry Wicks was meant to play at Calne against Oliver Moody from Wroughton in the 2nd round of the Bowls Wiltshire Unbadged singles competition, unfortunately Oliver was unable to make the game due to a work commitment and as a result Barry is now in the 3rd round.

On Saturday at 11am the Men travelled to Chippenham Town to take on Rob Clews team in the Bowls England Wiltshire section Quarter Finals of the Men’s 2. 4’s competition, please find below a report of the game from our rink correspondent –
“It was great to meet up with old friends again in what promised to be a very tough challenge, and so it turned out to be. Not just the opponents, but extremely blustery conditions to contend with.
Although always behind, Barry’s rink never let them get away. It was only a bad dropped six on end 9 that let us down. Eventually loosing by 3 shots.
Paul’s rink found themselves under the cosh after the first third, but rallied well in the middle stages to pull back to three behind, but ended nine shots in arrears.
However, the match was played in a nice spirit, amongst excellent company. Once again, although Chippenham Town were the better team collectively, we were not out of our depth.”
At the same time there was a coaching session at Calne, in the afternoon a friendly with Tetbury – report to follow.
The friendly against Tetbury happened to fall on the same day as the Calne summer festival. meaning that our visitors had to negotiate their way via Piggy Hill, however they all arrived with time to spare. and apart from a small spinkling of rain we had a very enjoyable afternoon, both teams were finding the green bowling well but very fast, various Tetbury players commented that it was the fastest they had seen this year, but agreed that it was a very good green.
Tebury just edged the overall win with 65 shots vs our 60 shots, both sides won two rinks, so overall a very fair result for everybody.
Once again many thanks to Pip and her glamorous assistant who kept us well fed and watered!
