The first game of the week was in the North Wilts mixed league away to North Wilts which ended with a win for North Wilts 54-50, (2-8pts) – the only winning rink being that with Rod Amor in command!.
Round 1 of the Men’s county Pairs match between Chippenham Town and Calne comprising of Barry W and Dave J played at Chippenham Town and Calne won, so onto the round 2 where they play another team from Chippenham Town, not surprising as of the 14 teams in Area 2 they have 9 of them. Well done to our pair.
On Tuesday in the WHL, the men in Calne ‘A’ were away to Trowbridge Town ‘A’ and managed a 17-12 win, whilst the Calne ‘B’ team were at home to Corsham ‘B’ and unfortunately came second, going down 13-15.
Seidal League News. A new venture for our lady members. Two teams in action. The Greens travelled to Chippenham Park in an attempt to conquer the might of their club. Alas we were unable to achieve that and the match ended 31 to 9 down. A great try on a very hot afternoon.
At the same time the Blue team was in action at home. Although a very enjoyable afternoon the score was 33 to 9 against Calne. All of the players gave it the very best and enjoyed playing against a team from another club, some for the very first time. It was good to see a ladies away team on our green. Something we missed last season.
On Wednesday our entry in the Men’s National Club 2 fours visited Chippenham Town to play against a very strong ‘A’ team and our 4s, skipped by Paul M and Martin S, lost 10-24 and 13-16 respectively – hard luck lads, try again next year.
On a happier note, our bee houses arrived, courtesy of the Cherhill Scout Group, so if you have any solitary bees, who do in fact make up 90% of the bee population and are very important pollinators, that need a holiday let us know.

On Thursday in the men’s M.W.T.L. Calne ‘A’ were at home to North Wilts ‘B’ winning 74-49 (10-2 pts) and Calne ‘B’ were away to Corsham and in a very close game lost 40-47 (0-12pts)
On Thursday the Ladies started their games in the Ladies Triples League, with a visit to Blue Circle where they won 32-30 shots (4-2 pts).

Friday found our pairs duo of Barry W and Dave J at Chippenham Town (again). They ran out winners 19-10 and now face another Chippeham Town Pair led by Jeremy Haselton on Monday evening at Calne, good luck lads !
There were mixed fortunes for our Ladies in the National Pairs Competition. Both were drawn at home , the results being Yvonne and Sheila won 24-9 against Wroughton, whilst Martha and Mayumi lost 13-25 13-25. The other entrants, Sue and Ann C, were away to Chippenham Park and lost 9-24. Well done to them all and good luck to Yvonne and Sheila in the next round. A lot of experience was gained, so roll on next year.
To round the week off, on Saturday we entertained 18 members of Weston Bowls Club from Bath to play 6 rinks of triples in a mixed friendly. They were full of praise for our green, saying it was as good as any they had in Bath or Bristol and felt that our club was very friendly and inclusive. We broke at 10 ends for tea and biscuits, however the rest and refreshments appeared to prove beneficial to our visitors as they went on to win 5 of the 6 rinks and we lost 82-131 – our only winning rink was Rod, Allan and Gill, so well done to them. The afternoon ended with drinks and a lot of friendly banter
We make a return visit to them later in the season and hope to get our revenge.
Open Days are interesting days for a bowls club – all are welcome to come and try their hand and every now and then you get a satisfied visitor who sends their thanks.

It’s Bottoms Up’ At The Bowls Club

An application from Calne Bowls Club for a licence to sell alcohol has been granted despite some local concerns.
At a meeting of the Northern Area Licensing Sub Committee yesterday, 27th April, the application was considered for the Calne Bowls Club to be allowed to sell alcohol to be drunk on-site between 12pm and 10pm on weekdays and 10am to 10pm on weekends.
Concerns had been raised that the proximity of a second licensed establishment to the already licensed Calne Recreational Club could cause noise disturbance to neighbouring properties.
Mr Wicks representing the club told the committee: “Recently we applied and got our own lease so we are now separated from the Calne Recreation Ground.
“Over the last five years the Rec have made it very difficult for the Bowls Club, they have actively tried to close us down and made it awkward for us to use the Rec club, fees were put up to £47 per member, hence we applied to break away and have our own lease.”
Mr Wicks went on to say that the Recreational Club has applied for planning permission for an L-shaped extension around the bowls green which would make it impossible for them to use the Rec’s licence facilities.
In answer to the concerns raised of a ‘significant noise disturbance’ Mr Wicks commented : “It would be nice to have a drink after a match,
“There is very little noise comes from the bowls club. We are very responsible people, we are all local people and we just want to enjoy a game of bowls and a drink afterwards.”
Cllr Peter Hutton asked Mr Wicks to confirm that they weren’t intending to hold birthday parties or wedding parties or other outside functions not relating to the sport of bowls and would only use the licence for post-match drinks. Mr Wicks confirmed that would be the case.
Resident Fiona Cottrill speaking on behalf of several of her neighbours queried the time when people would be leaving the club, Mr Wicks pointed out that bowling can’t be done after dusk, and estimated that 10pm would be the latest time that people would be leaving the premises. He added: “We are not going to be a drinking establishment, we are a ‘have a game of bowls, have a drink and go home’.”
Chairman of the Northern Area Licensing Sub Committee, Cllr Stewart Palmen announced that the group had resolved to grant the application for a licence to Calne Bowls Club.

Calne Bowls Club has been granted a licence to sell alcohol to members and guests after matches.
The licence will allow the club to sell alcohol to be drunk on-site between 12pm and 10pm during the week, and 10am to 10pm on weekends.
A representation raised concerns over the “prevention of public nuisance”. They said that a second drinking establishment in the area – Calne Recreational Club already has a club licence – would cause significant noise disturbance for nearby residents.
I am not going to use a lot of words but I would like to thank the anonymous person who posted the following on The Original Shout Out Calne today:
“I have to say how lovely Calne Bowls Club is looking, lots of people have been very busy, and all with a smiling face and an Hello to those passing. Good job!”
The members really appreciate this as they have worked very hard over the last month to get the club ready.

I managed to catch one of the stalwarts of the club, Gladys, waving a paint brush around, she is a dab hand at paining anything that isn’t moving!
