Very busy afternoon, Delayed Pairs quarter final with Angela C & Carole beating Jan & Rita on the last end, alongside a Paul Mackie Trophy game ended with Roy beating Mary B, and on the other rink some new members had a roll-up, supervised by Mary C.
Amid the rain and rolling clouds, the 2 teams took to the rinks, rink 6 was the one that would prove the battleground, in the end it was not the close game that was expected, with Martin and Mark winning on the 11th end 17-1. Congratulation to them for such a convincing win.
However it should be pointed out that Barry W was playing left handed due to a recent injury to his shoulder, whilst he was able to bowl and take part, he was nowhere near the normal high standard of bowling he demands of himself.
In the meantime here are some before, during and after pictures, thanks to Martin S and Jan.
It is 4-40pm, the rain is very heavy, thunder is rolling around the hills and all those who were going to bowl, have wisely stayed at home.
So let’s remember yesterday, we had several visitors to the club, it is rare especially when everything has to be booked to have the public playing, but below is a photo of 4 very happy Bowlers, who, after being away from the game for over 4 months came up and had a couple of hours bowling, this year we have had several visitors to our club, which is very satisfying.
Also on the rinks was a young lady called Arden, only 10 years old, after a few ends she was able to reach the ditch and produced some good shots that any bowler would have been proud of, see below.
So if you feel like a roll – up just send an email via our contact us page and for only £5 you can have 2 hours of bowling (£10, if we provide the bowls)
Everything is sanitised and hand gel is available, all you need is flat shoes
It stayed dry although after all the rain, the greens were a little heavy, In front of a few members both rinks had a good contest, winners on the night being
Mark and Martin S
Barry W and David.
Commiserations to Sheila, Martin G and Yvonne , Steve M
The date of the final to be fixed.
Last week it was very hot, a week later they forecast rain, but we were lucky, the weather was very good and we attracted quite a few visitors, resulting in a further 6 members, making a total of 19 this year. Jan, Roy and Pip, along with their helpers did a great job.
Thanks to all those who helped, it was a good day all round.
Below are some photos of the day
The Gazette and Herald have done it again, last year we were a Boules Club, this year they have moved our open day from a Sunday to a Saturday and not content with that they have relocated us to Beversbrook!
Anyway here is the article corrected by yours truly.
Bowling club holds second open day on Saturday (no it is Sunday) at Beversbrook ?(no we are at Anchor Road) after first success
CALNE Bowls Club held a successful Open Day on Saturday, with six new members and 12 interested referrals, and is looking forward to the second event this Saturday ?♀️ (no it is Sunday), (August 15) ?♂️ (No it’s August 16th), when they hope to encourage some more potential players to try the sport from 10am.
Secretary Stuart Beard said that the weather had been a little warm but everyone appeared to enjoy themselves, adding: “Fortunately, there were some family groups, so social distancing hadn’t become an issue. Booking is preferable either by email email hidden; JavaScript is required, or by phone to Men’s Secretary, Stuart, on 01225 706972, or Ladies’ Secretary, Janet, on 01249 816954.
“We did have a few visitors who just turned up on Saturday but we had some available slots and were able to give them a chance at this great game. We are beginning to be aware of a lot of untapped bowling talent in Calne, so come on give it a try, you may wonder why you haven’t tried it earlier.
“All you need is a pair of flat shoes and all other equipment will be supplied (suitably sanitised), so why not give it a try and find out what a great game bowls is.”
Details of our club and the Open Day are on the website: www.calnebowlsclub.co.uk
I have emailed Beversbrook to ensure that anyone looking lost on Saturday should be direct to us on Sunday.
After a very successful open day on Saturday 8th August, preparations are now complete for the next one this coming Sunday.

We found last Saturday that we had a few spaces spare so were able to entertain some visitors who came without booking – it is possible to just turn up but you might have to wait a little while if the green is full.
Come and visit us to find out what a great game Lawn Bowls is – you could even get the chance (for a small donation) to try Gladys’s fabled tea!
Very hot and very busy, a very successful day, with a lot of interest and 6 new members.
Thank you to all who turned up and helped out, could not have done it without you.
Have now completed the Gallery page, have a look, you may be there?
This is now on the coaching page, I would recommend members to familiarise themselves with the content.
